Transition Year

The TY portfolio, placements and reports, in one place.

The NCCA’s Transition Year Programme Statement, in every school since September 2025, builds TY around four Student Dimensions and asks schools to report on them through a student portfolio, a student reflection and a school report.

The Skilly TY Portfolio add-on gives every TY pupil a portfolio organised by those dimensions, and gives the TY Coordinator the year-group view, the reports and the certificates that come out of it.

Built on the Programme Statement

The four Student Dimensions

Every goal, experience and check-in is filed under the dimension it belongs to, so the evidence is already sorted when report time comes.

Personal Growth

Goals for confidence, wellbeing and leadership, and the 24 TY SPHE lessons, which land in the portfolio automatically.

Being a Learner

Learning goals set and reviewed through the year, projects and courses logged with a reflection, and the Living and Learning with AI lessons.

Civic & Community Engagement

Community placements, volunteering, events and sustainability actions, each recorded with what the pupil did and what they took from it.

Career Exploration

Work placements with host, dates and hours, and a reflection before, during and after. Career goals, reviewed at every check-in.

For pupils

My TY Portfolio

Goals

Pupils set goals under each dimension in their own words and mark them achieved, or changed. A changed goal stays on the record, because changing direction is part of TY too.

Experiences and placements

Work and community placements, events, projects, awards and short courses. Placements ask three questions: how did you prepare, what did you do, what did you learn. Awards note who issued them and whether they're certified.

Start, middle and end-of-year check-ins

Twenty-four short statements written for pupils, rated from "not yet" to "strongly". The same statements three times a year show how each pupil sees their own growth. It's a self-review, never a grade.

End-of-year reflection

Five questions that prepare the pupil for the student reflection the Programme Statement asks for, whether your school runs it as an interview or a short presentation.

For the TY Coordinator and TY Core Team

From portfolio to report

The whole year group on one page

Who has started, who has done each check-in, placement days per pupil, and which dimensions are still empty. Filter by class, export to CSV for the TY Core Team.

A TY report for every pupil

Built from the portfolio, organised by dimension: self-ratings from start to end, goals, placements, awards, and the pupil's own end-of-year reflection. Staff add a comment per dimension and an overall comment, then print or save as PDF.

Certificates for the celebration

A Certificate of Participation for each pupil, one per page, ready to sign. Numbers on it come from the pupil's portfolio, so every certificate is personal.

Teachers see their own classes

TY teachers get the same read-only view, scoped to the pupils they teach. Only the pupil can change their portfolio, and pupils are told who can read it.

Circular 0072/2026

Career Exploration and your guidance plan

The September 2026 guidance circular asks schools to integrate the TY Career Exploration dimension into their Whole-School Guidance plan, and to cover every part of work experience: preparation, engagement and reflection.

Skilly records placements exactly that way, so the TY Coordinator and the guidance counsellor can see what each pupil has done and what they took from it. It supports the guidance plan. It doesn’t replace guidance counselling, and it holds no guidance-counselling notes.
