What schools say

Trusted by SPHE teams

I used to spend hours reading through journals. Now Skilly scores them, and I just review the ones that need my attention. The safeguarding flags are genuinely life-changing — I caught a concern I would have missed.

Safeguarding

Concerns flagged before they escalate

Every student reflection is scanned by AI for indicators of bullying, self-harm, anxiety, abuse, and low mood. When something surfaces, the teacher and coordinator are notified immediately — no waiting for the next parent-teacher meeting.

Outside School Hours — Built-in Safeguards

Schools need clear boundaries. Skilly is designed with that in mind:

  • Flags are queued, not live-streamed. If a student writes a reflection outside school hours, any concern flagged by AI is held in the system and presented to the teacher and coordinator at their next login. Staff are never expected to monitor in real time outside working hours.
  • Crisis signposting built in. Every student who submits a reflection flagged as high-severity is immediately shown on-screen contact details for Childline (1800 66 66 66), 50808 Crisis Text Line, and Samaritans (116 123) — so support is available 24/7 even when the school is closed.
  • Clear disclaimer at point of use. Students see a visible notice that Skilly is a school learning tool — not a counselling or emergency service — and are directed to emergency contacts if they need immediate help.
  • Aligned with Children First. The platform supports — but does not replace — your school’s Child Safeguarding Statement and reporting obligations under the Children First Act 2015. Skilly provides the digital paper trail; your DLP and Deputy DLP retain full responsibility for mandated reporting to Tusla.

💡 We recommend every school includes Skilly in its Acceptable Use Policy and Child Safeguarding Statement, with a clear note that the platform is not monitored outside school hours. Skilly provides a template paragraph for both documents during onboarding.

FAQ

Common questions

How does the AI scoring work?+
When a student submits a reflection, Skilly's AI evaluates it against a 5-level rubric (Beginner → Expert) looking at personal depth, critical thinking, and self-awareness. It generates warm, formative feedback in 75–100 words. The teacher always has the final say — they can override any score with one click.
Can students see their AI score?+
Students see the effective score — which is the teacher's override if one has been set, or the AI score otherwise. They never see the raw AI score when a teacher has overridden it. AI feedback never mentions the score number or level name directly.
Does it work with Junior Cycle, TY, and Senior Cycle?+
Yes — Skilly covers the full NCCA specification for Junior Cycle (4 strands, 39 skills), a dedicated Transition Year programme (8 modules covering empathy, resilience, financial literacy, and more), and Senior Cycle (3 strands, 25 modules). Every learning outcome has pre-authored activities, reflection prompts, and ADRA lesson plans ready to use.
Can I upload and store my own resources and links?+
Yes. Teachers can upload and store their own links, files, and resources alongside any lesson in the curriculum library. If your department already has worksheets, videos, or external links you use, you can attach them to the relevant learning outcomes so everything lives in one place.
What happens when a safeguarding concern is detected?+
Every reflection is scanned for indicators across 7 categories: bullying, self-harm, abuse disclosure, anxiety, low mood, peer pressure, and general wellbeing concerns. When a flag is raised, the student's teacher and the school coordinator are notified by email immediately. Flags are tracked with an action log for your safeguarding records.
What happens if a student raises a concern outside school hours?+
Skilly is not a live monitoring tool — staff are never expected to be online outside working hours. If a student submits a reflection outside school hours that triggers a safeguarding flag, that flag is queued and presented to the teacher and coordinator at their next login. At the point of submission, the student is shown on-screen crisis contacts including Childline (1800 66 66 66), 50808 Crisis Text Line, and Samaritans (116 123). A clear disclaimer reminds students that Skilly is a school learning tool, not an emergency service. We recommend schools reference Skilly in their Acceptable Use Policy and Child Safeguarding Statement — we provide template wording during onboarding.
Is Skilly GDPR compliant?+
Yes. Every school gets its own isolated data environment with row-level security. Student data is never shared across schools. AI calls use zero-retention headers, and PII is redacted before any AI processing. We provide full data export and erasure flows, plus a downloadable Data Processing Agreement.
Where is student data stored?+
All data is stored in Supabase (PostgreSQL) on EU servers. No student data leaves the EU. We do not sell or share data with any third party. AI calls go through Anthropic's API with zero-retention headers enabled.
How long does onboarding take?+
Skilly provides full setup and training for every school. We handle the environment configuration, user upload and class assignment so you don't have to. We also run a training session for your SPHE team and coordinator so everyone is confident from day one. Most schools are fully live within a single morning.
How does the licence work?+
The licence is annual and renewed each year. Student data is stored throughout their school cycle — so a 1st Year student's reflections, scores, and progress carry with them all the way through to 3rd Year (or 6th Year). When a student leaves, their data can be exported or erased under GDPR.
Can we fund Skilly through the Book Scheme?+
Yes. Skilly qualifies as a digital learning resource under the Department of Education's free schoolbooks and classroom resources scheme. Many schools fund their licence this way. We can provide an invoice formatted for your BOM if needed.
Is Skilly suitable for DEIS schools?+
Absolutely. Skilly is designed to work in shared computer rooms as well as 1-to-1 setups. It can be funded through DEIS grants, the School Completion Programme, or the Book Scheme. The structured SPHE delivery, safeguarding alerts, and wellbeing data support your DEIS Action Plan and give you ready-made evidence for WSE inspections and SSE.
